The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved the launch of a Water Metering Project in a move aimed at transforming Islamabad’s water infrastructure and improving efficiency.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the Islamabad Water Agency chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The session was attended by CDA Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, Director General Islamabad Water, Director General Planning and Development, as well as representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Pakistan Telecommunications Infrastructure Authority (PTIA).
Randhawa announced that specialist consultants would be engaged to design and implement an advanced metering system, describing the project as a “landmark decision for Islamabad.” He said the initiative would modernize water management, enhance accountability, and help conserve vital resources.
The Water Metering Project, expected to cut line losses, reduce wastage, and introduce transparent billing, will serve as a benchmark for efficient urban water management in Pakistan. “Water is not only a basic need but also essential for the survival of every sector. We must value every drop to avoid future scarcity,” Randhawa emphasized.
Alongside the metering system, the meeting also discussed other modernization initiatives, including converting all tube wells and electrical installations to solar energy, introducing energy-efficient pumps, and upgrading sewerage networks. However, participants agreed that metering would be pursued as the immediate priority.
“Our aim is to adopt modern and sustainable solutions to ensure uninterrupted, clean, and safe water for the citizens of Islamabad. This project is a critical part of that vision,” Randhawa added.
