Pakistan Customs opens new laboratory at Azakhel dry port to streamline trade

Pakistan Customs has inaugurated a new laboratory at Azakhel dry port to facilitate faster and more efficient trade. The facility is equipped to test fabrics, plastics, plastic-related products, edibles, and dyes, addressing a long-standing need of importers.

Previously, samples had to be sent to laboratories in Karachi, Lahore, and Faisalabad, causing delays of several days and increasing costs. With the Azakhel laboratory operational, around 80 percent of samples will now be tested locally, reducing dwell time and lowering expenses for traders.

Importers have welcomed the initiative, noting that it will streamline clearance procedures. Junaid Altaf, President of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce, also praised the new facility, emphasizing that Customs controls will improve through the integrity of locally tested samples.

Officials said another advanced laboratory is expected to become operational soon at Torkham Border Station as part of the ITTMS Project, further expanding Pakistan’s trade facilitation infrastructure.
