The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with Meta, has launched “Teen Accounts” on Instagram to enhance online safety for users under the age of 16 by automatically filtering sensitive content and limiting unwanted contact.
According to a PTA statement, the new feature places users below 16 years of age into Teen Accounts by default. The system is designed to allow young users to explore the platform safely while protecting them from exposure to inappropriate content and online threats.
The initiative reflects PTA’s continued engagement with global digital platforms to promote child safety, digital literacy, and responsible internet use in Pakistan.
Officials said the feature aims to address growing concerns about online harassment faced by teenagers, particularly young girls, including issues such as cyberbullying, stalking, and exploitation.
The launch event featured awareness sessions and live demonstrations highlighting Instagram’s safety tools, reporting mechanisms, and best practices for maintaining digital well-being. Representatives from Meta, UNICEF, the National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC), and other child protection stakeholders attended the event.
PTA Chairman Maj. Gen. (R) Hafeez ur Rehman said the launch marked “a major step toward building a safer digital ecosystem for Pakistan’s youth.” He reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to strengthening user protection and promoting secure online engagement.
Dr. Priyanka Bhalla, Meta’s Head of Safety Policy for South Asia, said the initiative aligns with the company’s global safety programs that aim to empower millions of teenagers, including those in Pakistan, to have a more secure and positive online experience.
