Pakistan, Iran vow to deepen parliamentary and economic cooperation

Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday met Dr Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, and his accompanying delegation at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where both sides discussed a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including bilateral trade, parliamentary cooperation, and regional developments.

The meeting was followed by a luncheon in honour of the visiting delegation, the President’s Office said in a statement.

Welcoming the Iranian Speaker, Acting President Gilani said that Pakistan and Iran share deep-rooted bonds of faith, history, and culture, which continue to shape their friendship and cooperation. He noted that parliamentary engagement serves as an important bridge to enhance understanding and promote collaboration for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.

Gilani underscored the importance of strengthening political dialogue, economic connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges, highlighting the role of regular interaction between parliamentary committees and friendship groups in fostering cooperation on border management, counter-narcotics, and facilitation for pilgrims.

He recalled that during the August 2025 meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, both sides had agreed to significantly enhance bilateral trade, adding that Pakistan remains committed to advancing that goal. The Acting President also called for closer collaboration in education, culture, and youth linkages, including academic and medical exchange programmes.

Dr Ghalibaf thanked Acting President Gilani for the warm welcome and said that Iran regards Pakistan as a brotherly and trusted neighbour. He also referenced the Senate of Pakistan’s resolution expressing solidarity with Iran, echoing sentiments earlier expressed by Iranian President Pezeshkian before the Iranian Parliament.

The Iranian Speaker said Tehran is eager to expand parliamentary and economic ties and confirmed that an Iranian parliamentary delegation would attend the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Pakistan.

The Iranian delegation included Dr Reza Amiri Moghaddam, Ambassador of Iran; Fida Hossein Maleki, Chairman, Iran-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group; Mohammad Nour Dehani, Vice Chairman, Iran-Pakistan PFG; Rahmdel Bamiri; Mehrdad Goodarzvand Chegini; Fazlollah Ranjbar; Vahid Jalalzadeh, Deputy Minister for Parliamentary, Consular and Iranian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Abolfazl Amouei, Special Assistant to the Speaker for International Affairs.

From Pakistan’s side, participants included Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Syed Imran Ahmad Shah; Senators Sherry Rehman, Agha Shahzaib Durrani, Manzoor Ahmed Kakar, Hidayatullah Khan, Amir Waliuddin Chishti, and Naseema Ehsan (Convener of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Iran); as well as MNAs Syed Naveed Qamar and Syed Ali Qasim Gilani.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in all areas, maintaining close consultations on regional and international issues, and deepening Pakistan–Iran parliamentary and economic engagement.
