Pakistani generative AI startup Jams acquired by OpenAI

Generative AI startup Jams, co-founded by Asad Awan and Hamza Aftab, has joined OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s tech ecosystem.

The acquisition also represents the first exit for Pakistan-based venture capital firm Indus Valley Capital (IVC). Founder Aatif Awan said the deal demonstrates that Pakistani talent “continues to go global” and highlighted that Jams was IVC’s first investment under a model targeting small stakes in Pakistani founders building globally, particularly in the United States.

Founded by two former Meta engineers, Jams develops authentic video experiences using generative AI. The startup previously raised funding from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in 2022 and IVC.

Announcing the move on LinkedIn, co-founder Asad Awan said: “Hamza Aftab and I started Jams to explore the best AI experiences for the masses, and we are thrilled to continue this vision with the best product and AI builders of our time at OpenAI.”

The development underscores the growing global footprint of Pakistani entrepreneurs in advanced AI technologies and highlights the country’s contribution to cutting-edge innovations.
