ISLAMABAD: The government announced on Monday that the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) digital wallets will be fully operational by the end of November, marking a significant step in transitioning to a cashless economy. The next round of payments to beneficiaries will be disbursed through these digital wallets.
This announcement came during a review meeting on cashless economy measures, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting also highlighted the ongoing efforts to digitize bill payments, with electricity and gas bills now being paid through Raast QR codes, facilitating billions of rupees in transactions via digital systems.
The Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of the development of 10 million digital wallets under BISP, which are aimed at furthering financial inclusion. Emphasizing the need for increased awareness in rural areas, the PM stressed that achieving a cashless economy was crucial to eliminating the informal economy.
Additionally, the meeting covered the integration of a mobile application with Raast for government services, and the linkage of new business licenses and existing shop payments to digital systems, further promoting digital transactions across the country.
