80kg silver jewellery seized in smuggling attempt at Karachi airport

Rising global silver prices have led to a spike in smuggling attempts across Pakistan, with Customs foiling a major attempt at Jinnah International Airport’s International Mail Office (IMO), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) reported on Tuesday.

Authorities said 79.18 kilograms of silver jewellery, valued at around Rs66.9 million, were concealed inside three international parcels labeled as “ornaments/fashion ornaments.” The shipments originated from Hong Kong and were addressed to a recipient in Rawalpindi.

The seizure occurred during a detailed inspection under Customs’ enhanced scrutiny measures, with the goods confiscated before delivery to the consignee. FBR officials noted this is the first major silver interception at the IMO in terms of both volume and value.

Reaffirming its commitment to curbing illicit trade, the FBR stated that Pakistan Customs will continue to monitor postal and courier networks closely to prevent smuggling and protect the national economy.
