Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mehmood, 71, on Saturday passed away after battling cancer for several months.
Barrister Sultan was suffering from liver cancer and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Islamabad, where he breathed his last today.
His funeral prayer will be offered at 3pm on Sunday in Khari Sharif.
PTI-backed Barrister Sultan was elected as the president of AJK in August 2021. He had secured 34 votes out of 52.
Sultan, then PTI’s regional president, was elected to the AJK Legislative Assembly from LA-3 Mirpur-III, marking his seventh win in nine general elections since 1985.
President Asif Ali Zardari, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi among other officials expressed sorrow and grief over the death of the AJK president.
The KP governor said that the passing of Barrister Sultan Mahmood is an irreparable loss for Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. He described the late leader as a seasoned politician, senior jurist, and a strong voice for the Kashmir cause whose services will always be remembered.
Speaker Sadiq remarked that Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry was a seasoned statesman and a committed advocate of the Kashmir cause, whose tireless efforts played a pivotal role in amplifying the voice of the Kashmiri people across the world.
