FBR mandates digital tax filing, extends deadline for manual filers with free support

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has officially abolished manual income tax returns for Tax Year 2024, marking the final phase of Pakistan’s transition to a fully digital tax filing system. In a bid to support traditional taxpayers, the FBR has launched a comprehensive program, offering a two-month extension for manual filers and providing free assistance to ease the shift to digital submissions.

The new policy mandates all income tax returns to be filed through the FBR’s online portal, aimed at enhancing transparency, improving data management, and reducing revenue leakage. To help taxpayers accustomed to manual filing, the FBR has set up dedicated facilitation cells in every regional tax office across the country. These cells will provide free technical support for online registration, form filling, and digital submission.

Additionally, the FBR has extended the income tax return filing deadline for those transitioning to the online system until November 30, 2025, offering taxpayers a critical window to adjust without facing penalties for missing the original deadline.

For taxpayers with complex legal issues, the FBR will provide free legal services throughout the tax year. This initiative has been welcomed by tax experts, who view the extended deadline and hands-on support as an essential step in ensuring compliance while modernizing the tax system.

The FBR has encouraged all former manual filers to visit their regional tax offices to take advantage of the free services and ensure a smooth transition to the digital system, which is expected to streamline Pakistan’s tax administration and reduce inefficiencies.
