Finnish company eyes investment in Pakistan’s mineral sector

ISLAMABAD: Finnish company Metso has expressed interest in investing in Pakistan’s mineral sector, with plans to participate in the Reko Diq copper project, according to an official statement issued on Monday.

The development followed a meeting between Piia Karhu, President of Minerals at Metso, and Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani. Discussions focused on investment opportunities, particularly in copper mining.

Metso said it would supply mining technology and equipment and provide training to local human resources. Karhu also confirmed the company’s plan to participate in the Reko Diq project as a technology and service provider.

Kayani highlighted progress on the ML-1 and ML-3 railway lines, which are linked to the activation of the Reko Diq project targeted for December 2028. Both parties agreed to hold a follow-up meeting with technical experts from the Ministry of Railways.

In a separate meeting, the Metso delegation, accompanied by Finnish Ambassador Hannu Ripatti, met Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik.

Malik said Pakistan was moving toward mechanised and responsible mining under an updated mineral framework. He described the Reko Diq project as the “torch bearer” of Pakistan’s mineral sector and assured government support for investors.

Karhu confirmed Metso’s role as a supplier of equipment and services for the Reko Diq project and said the company plans to expand to other mineral projects in Pakistan. She added that Metso would invest in training local talent to support skill development.
