FTO orders probe into FBR over alleged failure to process tax return extension requests

The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has ordered an investigation into the Federal Board of Revenue after a public interest complaint alleged that the tax authority failed to act on taxpayers’ online requests for extensions in filing income tax returns for tax year 2025.

According to the complaint, taxpayers submitted applications through FBR’s IRIS portal, but the system did not process them, leaving the requests unattended in the Outbox as the filing deadline approached.

Acting on the matter, the FTO has summoned senior officials, including FBR’s Member Operations, Member IR-Policy, and the Director General (Information Technology), to appear on November 19, 2025, and explain the reported lapse.

The Ombudsman’s intervention underscores ongoing concerns over delays and systemic inefficiencies in tax administration that continue to affect taxpayer compliance and disrupt timely processing of statutory requests.
