The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) received praise from the Sub-Committee of the Public Accounts Committee for achieving a historic milestone by recovering over Rs 1 billion through enforcement actions against cartels and deceptive practices.
The CCP officials briefed the Sub-Committee, chaired by Ms. Shahida Akhtar Ali, regarding the commission’s enforcement measures against cartels and deceptive practices.
During a briefing, CCP Chairman Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu informed the committee that more than 50% of the commission’s pending court cases had been resolved, reducing the backlog from 567 to 280. This was the highest number of judicial disposals in a single year, with 224 cases decided across various forums, resulting in recoveries worth Rs 1 billion.
Dr. Sidhu also reported that the CCP had issued 14 enforcement orders against cartels, imposing penalties exceeding Rs 1 billion. In addition, 20 inquiries were completed regarding cartelization and dominance abuse, while 18 focused on deceptive marketing practices.
The CCP’s Market Intelligence Unit identified 200 potential cases of anti-competitive practices, further strengthening the commission’s enforcement capabilities. Dr. Sidhu also highlighted the establishment of a Centre of Excellence on Competition Law to advance research, policy development, and capacity building in the field.
The Sub-Committee praised the CCP’s performance and assured it of full support, emphasizing that its efforts are crucial for consumer protection, transparency, and promoting sustainable economic growth in Pakistan.
