Pakistan calls for UNESCO reform and strategic realignment

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan called for reform and strategic realignment of UNESCO at the ongoing session of the Executive Board, highlighting the need to address challenges in access to quality education, protection of cultural and historical sites, and issues related to disinformation and hate speech.

Dr. Syed Tauqir Hussain Shah, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Pakistan’s representative, delivered the statement, emphasizing the importance of aligning UNESCO’s work with its core areas: education, science, culture, and communication.

Dr. Tauqir Shah underscored the need for transparency and protection of UNESCO’s core programmes to ensure the organization achieves its objectives.

He congratulated Dr. Khalid El-Enany of Egypt on his election as Director-General of UNESCO for the 2025–2029 term and recognized his contributions to culture and education.

Dr. Tauqir Shah also thanked the outgoing Director-General for her leadership over the past eight years.
