Pakistan Railways (PR) has incurred an expenditure exceeding Rs1 billion to restore infrastructure severely damaged by the recent nationwide floods, official documents reveal.
Train operations on several sections — including Shadra-Narowal-Sialkot, Shorkot-Jhang-Shaheenabad, and Khanewal-Shorkot — were temporarily suspended due to breaches and track damage near flood-affected areas. The department spent a total of Rs1.18 billion on repairs to restore full connectivity.
According to documents available with Wealth Pakistan, major portions of railway tracks situated close to inundated regions were heavily affected. Reconstruction work between Thatta Mehla and Chund railway stations alone cost Rs987 million, covering the 14-kilometre stretch from KM 66/0 to 80/14.
An additional Rs180 million was utilized for the restoration of Thatta Mehla–Chund, Abdul Hakeem–Darkana, and Qila Soba Singh–Pasrur railway stations. Pakistan Railways also allocated Rs19.65 million for the repair of the Abdul Hakeem bridge and those located between MSKR-QSS, GDR-DBG, MTG-BOL, and HDR-TDM sections.
Operations of four trains — 9-UP, 10-DN, 125-UP, and 126-UP — were halted on August 27 after a breach of the track between Pasrur and Qila Soba Singh. The section reopened for full service on September 13 upon completion of repair work.
Similarly, train movement on the Shorkot–Jhang–Shaheenabad route was suspended on September 28 following a 1,200-foot breach near the Rivaz Railway Bridge No. 64 over the Chenab River between Thatta Mehla and Chund stations. Two trains, 11-UP and 12-DN, operate on this route, which remains under close monitoring after restoration.
