Pakistan reaffirms commitment to energy sector reforms with German support for green transition

Pakistan is committed to modernizing its energy sector with a focus on digitization, green energy, and research-led reforms, according to Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari.

Speaking during a meeting with a German Development Agency (GIZ) delegation on Tuesday, Leghari emphasized the importance of these areas in achieving sustainable development goals for the country.

The meeting, led by GIZ Deputy Head of Mission Arno Kirchhof, centered on ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and Germany in the energy sector. Discussions included initiatives on decarbonization and digitization of power distribution networks.

The German delegation outlined the €7 million grant programme launched in 2024, which will continue until 2026. This program provides technical assistance to Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy, with the goal of digitizing the country’s electricity distribution system, implementing pilot projects, and strengthening the capacity of energy sector officials.

Key components of the programme include regulatory support, renewable energy integration, pilot project implementation, and knowledge sharing.

In addition, GIZ announced an extra €2.5 million grant for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), aimed at developing pilot projects and business models in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy. The program is already in progress, with digitization pilots underway in two feeders in PESCO and LESCO.

Minister Leghari reaffirmed the government’s commitment to energy sector modernization, describing it as a national priority. He said the aim was to not only address current challenges but also build a sustainable, transparent, and modern energy system for the future.

Leghari also mentioned that a comprehensive research and development plan was being developed to align Pakistan’s energy policies with global best practices and modern technologies. He expressed gratitude for Germany’s ongoing support and called for further strengthening of ties with international partners to enhance research, capacity building, and policy reforms.

The German delegation praised Pakistan’s energy sector reforms and assured continued GIZ support in making the sector more modern and environmentally sustainable.
