PIA Board approves special allowance for Engineering Department amid privatisation efforts

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Board of Directors has granted in-principle approval for a special allowance to the Engineering Department, in recognition of its performance and in light of the national carrier’s ongoing privatisation process. The decision was made following a review of the department’s achievements over the past two years, particularly its adherence to modern safety standards.

A spokesperson for PIA confirmed the approval, adding that the matter had been under consideration for some time. The board also assessed the steps taken to restore PIA’s permission to operate flights in Europe and the UK, after a five-year hiatus.

During the meeting, a comparative analysis of the Engineering Department’s practices was conducted, benchmarking them against both domestic and international aviation industry standards. The board expressed its appreciation for the department’s efforts in maintaining aircraft and bringing them back into operational service.

Additionally, the board directed that all necessary approvals be obtained ahead of PIA’s privatisation. A proposal to transfer more of PIA’s assets to a government-owned holding company was also reviewed and approved, alongside the green light for the repair of essential aircraft engines and spare parts to support next year’s operational plans.
