Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that 70 additional electric buses will be deployed in Lahore by December, taking the total number of buses in the city’s electric fleet to 500 as part of Phase-II of the project.
She also revealed plans to launch metro bus services in Gujranwala and Faisalabad by next month, alongside a new sewerage and drainage system across Punjab.
Electric buses will be extended to Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Sheikhupura, reflecting the government’s aim to expand public transport beyond major cities.
Maryam Nawaz highlighted that electric buses are already operational in Mianwali, Wazirabad, Sargodha, and Sahiwal, where passenger turnout has exceeded expectations. Free travel is available for senior citizens, students, and differently-abled individuals. She noted that the buses feature mobile charging ports, Wi-Fi, CCTV, and ramps for wheelchair access.
The chief minister also provided updates on housing and rural infrastructure projects. Under the ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ scheme, 90,000 homes are under construction, with a target of 100,000 homes by November. Plans include clean drinking water supply, underground rainwater harvesting tanks, and construction of 25 kilometers of roads in every village.
Additionally, 2,500 rural settlements, mainly in South Punjab, are being developed as model villages with parks, paved streets, sanitation, and drainage systems.
Maryam Nawaz said these initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving public transport, urban infrastructure, and rural development across the province.
